Hindu Temples in Tamil Nadu 3600-IN-SHT-OG
During the classes, we will deal with the phenomenon of the South Indian Hindu temple. Topics covered include:
1) South Indian Hinduism;
2) Tamil temple myths and the idea of a holy place in the Tamil tradition;
3) temple architecture;
4) social and economic context of the functioning of temples;
5) priests, rituals, and festivals.
We will also make a brief review of Tamil holy places. We will discuss, among others: temples in Chennai, Madurai, Chidambaram, Thanjavur, Kanchipuram, and Srirangam.
