The two-semester class is designed to further explore Japanese writing, with an emphasis on the use of digital tools, and to prepare for passing the Japanese Language Proficiency Test at the highest level, N1 (now required for most work and study situations at universities in Japan), including mastering the 409 characters that make up the fourth and final part of the “Set of Everyday Characters” (Jōyō Kanji), and practicing reading and writing skills at an advanced level.

Assessment criteria
The following criteria will be used in the evaluation:
- Class attendance (at least 50 percent attendance per semester),
-in case of absences - medical exemption
- up to two unexcused absences per semester
- preparation for classes, activity in class, mastery of current material,
- mid-semester written tests, the passing of which will be a prerequisite for semester and annual credit.
- two (2) major mid-term per semester, and the grade drawn from the average score of these. Each colloquium has two deadlines.
Failure to pass any mid-term on the second deadline means failure to pass the entire semester. Criteria for passing the subject will be profiled by skills: P = writing, C = reading, R = comprehension.
Written test for a grade in the semester, an exam annually
