B.A. Seminar 3600-7-HE3-SL(Z)
The aim of the course is to instruct the students the requirements of writing an academic thesis. The seminar is devoted to the analysis of
selected issues of Hebrew literature, linguistics, Judaism, history of Jews and Israel or socio-political issues of Israel on the basis of source
materials in the Hebrew language.
During the classes students become familiar with principles of methodology such as:
-subject selection.
- exploration and use of sources.
-referring state of knowledge on the chosen topic.
- argumentation,
-writing and presenting the thesis.
The class is also designed to practice the skills of constructing bibliographies, footnotes and citations.

Alumnus knows and understands:
- the place and importance of Oriental studies in the humanities and their specificity in relation to the subject and methodology [ K_W01]
- demonstrates basic grasp of contemporary cultural life in Israel and of the Jews. [K_W16]
- the state of research in chosen aspects pertaining to Jewish Studies and Israeli Studies. [K_W17]
- basic analysis and interpretation methods of various products of culture characteristic of chosen theories and schools of research within
the scope of cultural and literary studies, linguistics, philosophy and religion studies and history [K_W18]
- basic analysis and interpretation methods of various products of culture characteristic of local traditions in Israel and among Jews in the
diaspora [K_W19]
- the basic terms and rules of copyright and protection of intellectual property [K_W20]
Skills: Alumnus is able to:
- search for, analyze, evaluate and use information from different sources [K_U01]
- read, analyze and interpret Hebrew literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) in Israel and appropriately place
them in their cultural context [K_U06]
- compare and perceive interrelations between chosen literary texts and other works of culture (film, press, social writing) of Israel and
Judaism within the scope of tradition and modern times [K_U07]
- analyze and interpret source texts in Hebrew [K_U13]
- interpret key terms from Hebrew culture through linguistic/philological analysis [K_U15]
- fluently use the script of Hebrew and the necessary tools to learn and analyze it (traditional and electronic dictionaries, lexicons, linguistic
corpora, data bases, etc.) [K_U16]
- has the necessary skills to prepare seminar papers: can select and find sources and analyses in Hebrew, knows the methodology of
writing seminar papers. [ K_U18]
- use basic knowledge in the scope of methodology of cultural research in a seminar paper [K_U19]
- choose and formulate a subject of a BA thesis, select and find sources in Hebrew, make references to basic theoretical approaches

- has a skill in presenting detailed aspects within the scope of cultural issues of Judaism and Israel in Polish and in Hebrew taking into
consideration the intellectual tradition of Judaism and Israel. [K_U21]
- has a skill at formulating own opinions and conclusions in writing and in speech both in Polish and in Hebrew [K_U22]
- has the ability of substantive argumentation with the use of other authors’ views [K_U23]
- can communicate with specialists in the fields of academic research and in academic disciplines pertinent to the Oriental studies -
Hebrew Studies using contemporary IT technology [K_U25]
- can acquire knowledge independently and develop research skills following the research supervisor’s instructions [K_U26]

Assessment criteria
The final evaluation is an average of results from student’s attendance, activity during the class and home works (subsequent chapters of
BA thesis).
