The lecture covers the following topics in chronological order:
1) General introduction to the source texts: Bible, apocrypha, epigraphic documents and rabbinic literature. The peoples and lands of biblical history. Geography and biblical archaeology. Methods of critical reading of source texts.
2) Five books: Biblical prehistory (Genesis 1-11); History of the Patriarchs (Genesis 12-50); Exodus from Egypt; Establishment of the covenant and the road to Canaan. Israelite settlement in Canaan (Josh - Judah). Religion and Canaan culture.
3) The rise and division of the kingdom (1-2 Sm , 1 Kings). Daily life in ancient Israel. Public and private religious worship in ancient Israel. The great prophets of the 8th century BC.
4) Reform attempts and the fall of the monarchy of Israel and Judah. of Judah. Deuteronomist history. Literature of the Babylonian captivity period.
5) Return and reconstruction - the Persian period. The post-exile Jewish community. Education and religious formation.
6) Hellenization and the Roman period. Maccabean uprising . The Hasmonean and Herodian dynasties. The first and second Jewish wars. The development of the Diaspora.
7) The Medieval World: Jews in Christian Europe (Ashkenaz). The Jews in the Medieval Arabic-Speaking World . Turning Point: -The Spanish Expulsion . Medieval Jewish Mysticism
8) The Early Modern Period (Sixteenth–Eighteenth Centuries): Judaism and Science in the Age of Discovery . A History of Hasidism (Origins and Developments ). Jews and Judaism in the Early Modern New World (Central
and North America). The Jews of the Ottoman Empire .

Assessment criteria
The final passing grade is the average calculated from the grades of the final exam (test), essay or paper, and attendance and activity in class.
