Monographic lecture: Marivaux, a misguided libertine ? 3304-2DXW-WM-MAZA-OG

Enlightenment and anti-Enlightenment, is it right and if so, on what level can they be opposed to each other? An excerpt illustrating this issue will be the reading of Marivaux's journalism, narrative prose and comedy as works opposing fashionable libertine ideas. The paradox of Marivaux is that - as a student of Locke and Malebranche - he uses the tools of the philosophy of the Enlightenment, while remaining a deeply religious moralist. Marivaux's polemic with Crébillon son or with Montesquieu from the "Persian Letters" does not take place on the same axis as with Fenelon, the author of "The Cases of Telemac". But these two different fronts of criticism perhaps serve a related purpose. Do comedies and the so-called novels of mature age, i.e. "Life of Marianne" and "Career of a Peasant"?

After passing the monographic lecture, the student

- knows and understands in-depth the place and importance of the humanities, in particular literary studies, in the system of sciences and its subject and methodological specificity, as well as general and specific terminology in the field of French culture of the 18th century and the processes taking place within it, tendencies, directions and research methodologies in the area of the French Enlightenment, issues in the field of general literary studies and the principles of analysis and interpretation of texts belonging to various literary genres from that period (K_W01, K_W02, K_W03, K_W04, K_W05, K_W06, K_W09);

- can independently acquire knowledge and plan their own learning, guide others in this area and develop complex skills using various sources, as well as recognize, analyze in-depth and interpret various types of cultural products (paintings, graphics, literature), using appropriate and complex terminology and appropriate research methods and techniques (K_U03, K_U05)

- is ready to be open to individual and cultural differences and understand their ethical dimension (K_K03)

Assessment criteria

Passing conditions: active presence (knowledge of previously sent fragments of texts as illustrations of the lecture, with attached cards, the so-called fiches de lecture) and a 30-minute control test at the end of the semester. More than three unexcused absences (not counting the first classes) will result in being removed from the student list.
