Philosophy 3301-ZFIL-ANG
The lecture is intended for second-year students of the MA level. It explores philosophy from a contemporary perspective. It spans four major themes that provide students with a broad view of the issues and traditions in philosophy, with each theme acting as a distinct unit. The first unit concerns ontology and examines classical approaches to the matter of what there is, focusing on Plato and Aristotle. The second unit concerns identity, and specifically personal identity. It encompasses discussion of Descartes, Locke, and contemporary perspectives. The third and fourth units turn toward more contemporary movements in philosophy, namely existentialism as an example of literary philosophy and philosophy of language as an example of analytic thought. The former includes discussion of Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, and Sartre, whereas the latter focuses on theories of meaning and reference via the work of Mill, Frege, Fodor and Sellars, among others.
