Topics in Creative Writing 3301-LA2251-2ST
Topic/s and/or genre/s for each edition of the course will be chosen by the professor. This way, the professor could teach to his/her/their strength. Since this is a graduate-level class, the main focus will be to ready the students’ work for publication. The first step is to show the various venues of publications and what they accept. Hence, not only will the students read samples from full-length collections to learn about various presses, but they will also study pieces in literary journals and more popular magazines. While studying these venues, they will be given writing exercises to explore those different styles and to learn what they are aesthetically drawn to as well as which styles best suit their voice and subject matter.
While studying and imitating newly published work will be an important aspect of the course, the main focus will be on the students creating original work and workshopping that work in order to ready it for revision and eventual publication. Various methods of workshopping will be used, but all will include some form of students sharing original writing and receiving feedback from their peers and professor.
The course will culminate in a portfolio of revised and polished pieces as well as a full publishing plan. There will also be a reading on the last day of class to share some of the revised work aloud.
