Translation Studies: Language and Culture- MA Seminar 2 3301-JSS2SZY02
The MA seminar surveys the major concepts, topics, tendencies, research areas and theories in Translation Studies, preparing the students to undertake their own research to result in an MA thesis. In semester 1 and 2 we discuss selected topics and approaches of contemporary Translation Studies to inspire students to explore the field and provide them with research tools and descriptive frameworks to be applied in preparing MA theses. The selection of topics to be discussed, their allocation to particular semesters and the time devoted to each of them can be modified depending on students' interest. Semesters 3 and 4 are devoted to individual work on MA projects.

14. The concept of translation series.
15. Humour in translation.
16. Proper names in translation.
17. Imagery in translation.
18. Translating for music.
19. Audiovisual translation (subtitling, dubbing, voice-over).
20. Intersemiotic translation.
21. The role of paratexts in translation
22. Problems of translating non-standard language varieties.
23. Bibliographic and formal conventions applicable to MA theses.

Knowledge: students will be able to:
K_W01 identify and characterize on an advanced level the place and status of translation studies within the humanities
K_W02 describe on an advanced level the current trends in translation studies within English studies
K_W04 characterize on an advanced level the principles of research design in translation studies, with special focus on the application of methods and tools in formulating research problems and testing hypotheses
K_W05 identify the notions and principles pertinent to intellectual property and copyright in research on translation
K_W06 characterise economic, legal and other factors relevant for various kinds of professional activities related to translation
Abilities: students will be able to:
K_U01 apply advanced terminology and notions pertinent to translation studies
K_U02 apply advanced research methodology of translation studies within English studies, respecting ethical norms and copyright law
K_U03 apply knowledge obtained during the seminar to account for and solve a translation analysis problem, thereby completing a research task related to translation studies
K_U04 analyze linguistic, literary and cultural phenomena relevant to research on translation and draw generalizations on their basis in the context of societal, historical and economic factors on an advanced level
K_U05 discern alternative methodological paradigms within translation studies
K_U06 find information in various sources and critically assess its usefulness for research related to the topic of the MA project in translation studies
K_U07 use modern technology in the process of finding information relevant to their MA project in translation studies and communicating with academic teachers, colleagues, representatives of various institutions and fellow participants in classes and projects, applying various channels and techniques of communication
K_U09 present their knowledge on translation research in a coherent, precise and linguistically correct manner in English on level C2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, ensuring an appropriate register and form
K_U11 design one’s own development as regards their MA project in translation studies
Social competences: students are ready to:
K_K02 apply knowledge and skills obtained in developing their MA project in translation studies to undertake lifelong learning, as well as personal and professional development
K_K03 take responsibility for performing one’s duties, with due respect for the work of others, obey and develop the ethical norms in academic settings related to research in translation studies

Language education at B2+ level
Assessment criteria
In semester 2 credit will be based on a presentation showing the progress in collecting material for analysis in the MA thesis, preparing a detailed plan of the thesis with a bibligraphy and a draft of a chapter.
Three absences are allowed.
