Linguistic analysis of selected passages of Old English prose and poetry, including elements of phonology, lexis, semantics, versification.
A selection of excerpts from Old English source texts discussed in class includes:
1. Fragments from Aelfric's prose
2. Fragments from the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle
3. Caedmon's Hymn/Bede's Death Song
4. Fragments from The Battle of Maldon / The Battle of Finnesburh.
4. Riddles
5. The Seafarer
6. The Dream of the Rood
7. Beowulf (fragments)
