The history of the culture of the countries of the region after 1918 (II) Germany 3224-D2HISNIE
The class aims to familiarise students with the main problems of German culture history on the background of political and social accounts from 1918 to modern times. Issues such as the interaction of cultures, national and state ideologies, social movements, changes in mentality, mental and cultural transformations and discussion over the meaning of national history will be addressed. The Student develops his research skills, learns to acquire knowledge independently, using the support of a supervisor.
The following issues will be discussed:
1) Germany in search of a new identity – Weimar Republic.
2) "In the Possession of totalitarianism" – German society between 1933-45 and 2004.
3) German society during II World War
4) Holocaust
5) "The memory of the Lost Land" – the experience of the German displaced persons.
6) Denazification
7) West Berlin – divided city as a symbol of divided nation.
8) The state of Adenauer – the regime, politics, attitude to the past.
9) 1968 in western Germany.
10) GDR – Power, society, ideology
11) Dissident movement in the GDR.
12) The overturning of the Berlin Wall, the unification of Germany and the transformation of consciousness in the German nation.
13) immigrants in modern Germany and cultural changes in the WEST.
14) Polish-German reconciliation.
15) German history debates.

Knowledge: A graduate knows and understands:
[Knowledge:]
1) has a basic knowledge of the terminology of cultural studies, taking into account the research perspectives of Germany (directions, texts, researchers in the field of cultural studies) and the specifics of the development of these studies in the countries of the region; has a basic knowledge of the terminology of related disciplines, which is indispensable in becoming acquainted with and understanding the cultural phenomena of Germany.
2) has a basic knowledge of the specifics of various cultural models in anthropological terms (traditional, nobility, bourgeoisie, the masses), the processes of their transformation and interconnections as well as their emanations in the symbolic and semiotic spheres, and thus in the arena of the culture, art, literature, and history of Germany.
[Skills:]
1) is able to search, select, analyse, and make use of the information he or she needs from various sources.
2) is able to develop his or her research skills; acquire knowledge independently, making use of the support of an academic supervisor; skilfully formulate thoughts; and present the results of research in the form of oral or written statements (of various types).
[Social competences:]
3) is prepared to critically assess his or her knowledge, engage in continuous learning, and supplement acquired knowledge.
4) to set priorities for the implementation of tasks assigned to him or her and others in the area of social obligations.
Assessment criteria
One condition for passing the subject is compulsory attendance at classes in accordance with the Details of principles of study at the Faculty of Applied Linguistics (resolution no. 114 of the LS Division Council of 19 December 2017).
Classes will be conducted in the form of exercises. Active participation in the exercises means substantive participation in at least 50% of the classes.
The final grade comprises:
Substantive participation in discussion during classes (20%)
Written work or presentation on the subject designated by the lecturer (20%).
Written work (3-6 pages) or a presentation on the material provided by the lecturer - this will include the matter discussed during the classes.
The final deadline for submitting a paper is the date set by the teacher during the first or second class. Students absent from these classes are required to obtain information from the teacher conducting the class.
Oral (60%): full answer = 30%, partial = 15%.

61‒70%: 3+
71‒80%: 4
