Introduction to translation studies 3221-S1-FBA-WP22-OG
The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the main directions of the development of translation theory: from the theory of the pre-scientific period, through linguistic and functional theories, to contemporary theories characterized by an interdisciplinary approach and going beyond the hitherto boundaries of translation studies. Practical issues are also discussed during the classes, incl. translation competences, the problem of translation errors or the selection of appropriate translation techniques.
If it is not possible to conduct classes in the form of stationary classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Zoom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.

KNOWLEDGE:
The student knows and understands at an advanced level

- language functioning in various contexts, incl. literature, culture, religion, art, politics, economy and media

- use theoretical approaches, research paradigms and concepts specific to linguistics when communicating with the environment and during debates and discussions.

- critical evaluation of knowledge and received content;
- correct identification and resolution of professional dilemmas in accordance with the traditions and principles of professional ethics
Assessment criteria
Conditions for admission to the final credit:
- systematic preparation of the given material for classes
- timely homework
- active participation in work on presentations, individual and group speeches
Credit - written test.
Test - grading scale:
99 - 100% - 5! (excellent)
93 - 98% - 5 (very good)
87 - 92% - 4.5 (good plus)
77 - 86% - 4 (good)
71 - 76% - 3.5 (sufficient plus)
60 - 70% - 3 (sufficient)
Less than 60% - 2.0 (failing)
The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides whether to acknowledge the absence. Exceeding the excused and unjustified absences for 50% of classes may be the basis for failing the course. The conditions for completing the course within the retake date are the same as those for the first time.
