Editing of scientific texts with elements of proper Belarusian language 3221-S1-FBA-RTN32-OG
The introductory part of the course will consist in the analysis of selected scientific articles, on the basis of which the structure and style of the scientific text will be discussed. Comparative analysis of texts teaches accurate drawing of conclusions, understandable presentation of the main idea, accurate selection and transmission of information and appropriate linguistic registers. Later in the course, students will focus on preparing their own scientific texts, starting from the outline of the dissertation, ending with fragments of thesis or scientific articles.
During the entire course, topics related to the structure of scientific texts, the style of scientific expression, linguistic correctness and editing of scientific texts will be covered.
The main part of the classes will be based on students' own texts.
The following topics are planned to be covered during the course:
1. Style and structure of scientific text.
2. Sentence. Paragraph. Chapter.
3. Introduction and conclusion.
4. Abstract and synopsis.
5. Bibliography and recipes.
6. Special characters and abbreviation rules.
7. Difficult cases of Belarusianism.
8. Quote, paraphrase.
9. Rules for editing texts in Belarusian.

Graduates will know and understand:
- in an advanced level the specific subject matter and methodology of linguistic research
- linguistic terminology in an advanced level
- the functioning of language in various contexts, including literature, culture, religion, history, art, politics, economy and the media
- basic notions and principles of intellectual property protection, in particular copyright
Graduates will be able to
- search for, analyse, evaluate, select and use information
use multilingual sources, including Internet sources
- formulate and analyse research problems in the field of linguistics, select research methods and tools, including advanced information and communication techniques
- use theoretical approaches, research paradigms and concepts relevant to linguistics when communicating with the environment and during debates and discussions
- Recognise different types of literary works and analyse and interpret them critically in a wider context.
-recognise different types of texts and conduct linguistic analyses of them in a wider context
- write correct, clear and coherent written compositions in Polish and foreign languages on selected topics.
- plan and implement their own lifelong learning independently
Graduates are prepared to
- critically evaluate the knowledge they possess and the content they receive
- correctly identify and solve professional dilemmas in accordance with traditions and principles of professional ethics
- initiate actions for the benefit of the public interest and local environment, acting in an entrepreneurial manner
Assessment criteria
- attendance and participation in classes (2 unexcused absences allowed)
- timely completion of own work
- pass - presentation of a detailed outline of the diploma thesis and fragments of a scientific work or article.
Detailed assessment criteria, resulting from the form of work proposed by the lecturer, will be provided during classes.
