ntroduction to gender linguistics 3202-S2WMLG12o-OG
The aim of the course is to introduce the students to the theory of gender and its references to the problems of language functioning. The discussed issues are connected with: the influence of the national culture on the language system, the reflection of gender stereotypes in the language, the influence of the gender on the sender’s/ receiver’s message on the choice of the communication strategy, creating woman’s picture in magazines.

Learning outcomes
Knowledge:
- the student knows the basic terminology in the scope of gender linguistics; student
- the student has basic knowledge of the history of women’s movements in Poland, Russia and in the West;
- the student knows the basic theories explaining the differences in women’s and men’s behaviour;
- the student has well-ordered knowledge of the differences in women’s and men’s speech behaviour.
Skills:
- the student points out the arguments for and against the theories explaining women’s and men’s behaviour;
- the student gives examples of behaviour and opinions related to gender stereotypes;
- the student gives examples of the gender asymmetry in the Polish and the Russian language;
- in the scientific texts for the public the student distinguishes language units conditioned by the sender’s or receiver’s gender of the message.
Social competences:
- the student is conscious of the gender stereotypes and tries to counteract;
- the student accepts different attitudes, opinions and arguments in interpersonal contacts, especially in inter-gender relationships.
Assessment criteria
• Continuous assessment (current preparation for classes and activity) – 40%
• Test. Questions: 14. Max points: 45 – 60%
Points and marks:
25 – 28 = 3,0
29 – 33 = 3,5
34 – 38 = 4,0
39 – 42 = 4,5
43 – 45 = 5,0
Final grade 5!: current preparation for all classes and marks 5,0 of test.
The completion of the subject requires from the student:
30 hours of classes (1 ECTS),
15 hours of preparation for the classes (0,5 ECTS)
15 hours of preparing for the written test (0,5 ECTS).
TOTAL: 60 hours (2 ECTS)
The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.
Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course.
The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.
If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
