History of Russian literature 1895-1929 3202-S1OHL22e
The aim of the lecture is to present the historical and literary period between 1895-1929, the so-called “Silver Age” period of the Russian literature as well as to acquaintance students with the main movements in Modernist literature: Neo-Romanticism and Neo-Realism and with the most important literary phenomena of this period: Symbolism, Acmeism, Futurism, and with the nascent literary avant-garde trying to break with tradition; as well as the characteristics of the work of outstanding writers of this period and their texts.
Classes are devoted to the analysis and interpretation of selected literary works, literary manifestos and works on literary criticism. The course aims to deepen the knowledge of the most distinguished literary phenomena of the “Silver Age”, develop the sensitivity to the diversity of aesthetic proposals, and to increase research skills in the process of exploring literary phenomena, consciously breaking with the traditional poetic realism.
Points in detail:
1. „Silver Age” in Russian culture. Cultural and social situation (1895-1929). Literature, philosophy, history and politics.
2. Russian philosophy of „Silver Age”: from Vladimir Solovyov to Vasily Rozanov. Art as theurgy. Literary studies of „Silver Age”.
3. Main discourses in Russian literature of the Silver Age (erotica, politics, aesthetics, medicine, military, province, Moscow vs St. Petersburg).
4. Antoni Chekhov: between tradition and novelty.
5. Maxim Gorky as a writer and an organizer of literary life.
6. Poetry of the Silver Age: lyrical subject in the symbolic form of the text; intertextuality. Russian symbolism: Alexander Blok, Vyacheslav Ivanov, Andrei Bely.
7. Prose of the Silver Age: diversity and poetics of genres, autobiographic narrative and psychologism. Psychologism towards poetics of a genre. Works of Fedor Sologub, Leonid Andreyev, Dmitry Merezhkovsky. Symbolism vs psychologism.
8. Acmeism in the Silver Age. Works of Innokenty Annensky, Nikolay Gumilev, Osip Mandelshtam and Mikhail Kuzmin.
9. Russian Futurism: novelty of content and form. Futurism and the Russian Revolution of 1917.
10. Russian drama 1895-1929; genre diversity, modernist trends, revolutionary and social themes.
11. Literature and the Revolution of 1917. The attitude of Russian writers to the events of 1917. Poem by Alexander Blok («Двенадцать»), poems by Sergey Yesenin and Maxymillian Voloshin; prose by Ivan Bunin («Проклятые дни») and Maksim Corky («Несвоевременные мысли»).
12. Thematic diversity of Russian literature after the 1917 revolution. Satirical prose: a novel by Ilya Ilf and Yevgeni Petrov («Двенадцать стульев»), short stories by Mikhail Zoshchenko.
13.Russian poetry (1917-1929), its thematic diversity. Works of Nikolai Zabolotsky, Boris Pasternak.
14. Prose of Mikhail Bulgakov.
15. Russian literature abroad. First wave Russian emigration: Ivan Bunin, Alexander Kuprin, Aleksey Remizov, Gajto Gazdanov, Vladislav Khodasevich, Marina Tsvetaeva, Vladimir Nabokov. Realism, psychologism and topic diversity.

Learning outcomes
KNOWLEDGE:
Students know basic literary phenomena and the historical facts from a particular period covered by the course.
Students are aware of a variety of possible aesthetic assumptions, multitude of artistic concepts and the fact of existence of many poetic languages.
Students realize the variety of possible aesthetic assumptions, the multiplicity of conceptions of art and coexistence of different poetic languages;
Students have the knowledge about the main controversial issues in the studied phenomena as well as knowledge of critical literature on the studied literary facts.
SKILS:
Students are able to characterise the main phenomena of the Silver Age: the trends, problems, works of individual writers, etc.
Students are able to interpret literary works from the point of view of program aesthetic assumptions and their implementation
Students are able to perform semantic analysis of texts representing different aesthetics;
Students can analyse and interpret not only a single piece of a literary work, but also poetic cycles, poems, volumes of lyrical works;
Students learn poetic texts by heart.
Students can independently search for materials broadening knowledge about a particular literary phenomenon.
Students are able to use proper literary terminology.
SOCIAL COMPETENCES:
Students are aware of the influence of Russian culture of the Silver Age on the European cultural heritage.
Students are aware of their knowledge and their own skills in understanding Russian culture.
Students realize the need for dialogue of cultures in the contemporary world.
Assessment criteria
Form of the exam: oral
During the exam questions are asked covering issues presented during the lecture and exercises.

Student: characterizes the epoch, period or literary direction with the use of various determinants (philosophical, worldview, poetics etc.), calls the names of representatives (also secondary) shows detailed knowledge of the content of reading, conducts a comprehensive analysis (referring to the genre, structure and content), gives various research positions, places the writer's work and work in the historical and literary process. The statement is spontaneous, comprehensive, thoughtful, the student uses specialist terminology extensively.

Requirements for the 5th rating!
- 3 points for every question,
- meeting the requirements for 3 points and in addition: knowledge and skills outside the curriculum, reading knowledge from outside the reading list, references to world literature.
The condition for obtaining a grading is:
Knowledge of the content of texts on the reading list (40%)
Self-preparation and presentation of the analysis of the author's poetic work included in the reading list (20%)
Continuous evaluation (current preparation and attendance at classes) 40%
The student gets a grading on condition that all three requirements are met.
The student has the right to 2 unexcused absences, each subsequent one requires justification. The lecturer decides on the recognition of absence.
Exceeding excused and unexcused absences by 50% of classes may be grounds to fail the course. The conditions for passing the course on the resit exam are the same as on the ordinary of exam.
If it is not possible to conduct classroom classes, classes will be conducted using distance communication tools, most likely Google Classroom and others recommended by the University of Warsaw.
