Seminar of Dr Mariusz Gradowski 3106-SEMDYPMG
The seminar is addressed to musicology students interested in issues related to, among others:
- Polish and foreign pop music (history, theory, aesthetics)
- Polish and foreign rock music (history, theory, aesthetics)
- Polish and foreign jazz music (history, theory, aesthetics)
- Polish and foreign film music (history, theory, aesthetics)
- music anthropology
- song studies
- popular music studies
- sociology of music
- the functioning of music in the context of culture.
Other areas included in systematic musicology are also possible.
The seminar is open to third-year undergraduate students (Bachelor's seminar), as well as to second-year graduate students (Master's seminar). If a student wishes to realise the seminar as a second-year student, he/she is obliged to decide on such a course settlement by the middle of the winter semester.

In the academic year 2023/2024, classes will be taught in accordance with the entries presented in the "Basic subject information". All specific issues concerning the possibility of pursuing topics proposed by students in the seminar will be discussed and resolved during the first class. |

Learning outcomes
Research methodology in the field of so-called systematic musicology, with particular reference to the scopes outlined in the main description.
Preparation of the queries.
Mastering the skills of a academic writing.
Preparation of an undergraduate thesis or master's thesis.
Assessment criteria
1st semester:
- choice of topic,
- reading of the recommended readings
- individual queries
- preparation of a presentation with preliminary results of the research and presentation of the outline
- preparation of the first chapter of the thesis.
2nd semester
- consultation of queries
- consultation of chapters
- submission of the final thesis
If student wishes to take the Bachelor's/Master's exam in July, the first draft of the entire thesis should be handed in by 1 June. If the thesis is handed in later, the July deadline may not be feasible and the Bachelor's/Master's exam will take place in the September deadline.
