Music and moving picture (module II) 3106-MUZOB-KON
The history of film music (wih special reference to the rich Hollywood tradition – from silent movies to the 1990s); relations between classical and film music (language, techniques, mutual influences); profiles of major composers (e.g. M. Steiner, E. Korngold, F. Waxman, B. Kaper, M. Rozsa, E. Morricone, J. Goldsmith, J. Williams, Vangelis); elements of the aesthetics of film music (including the ideas of T.W. Adorno and Z. Lissa).
Required readings and film music analysis (i.e. "Metropolis", "Citizen Kane", "The Good, The Bad and The Ugly", "East of Eden", "Star Wars", "Chariots of Fire", "Rain Man", "Atonement", "Nóż w wodzie", "Podwójne życie Weroniki").
The history of music videos and music films, with theoretical and analytical approach (Michael Gondry, Spike Jonze etc.)

Having completed the course, student:
- knows basics of film music history
- is able to point main turning points in its development
- is able to analyse films and music discussed durig classes
- is able to use Zoffia Lissa's film music analysis tools
- is able to recognize and name movie themes (along with composer's name) according to presented list of songs
- is able to analyse music videos and knows basics of music films and videos history
Assessment criteria
Credits: on the basis of attendance, presented paper.
