Monographic Seminar on Literary Studies 3020-BB1K-L
The student may choose a literary or linguistic seminar,
each person completing it within two years of study
A literary master's seminar is obliged to select at least
one linguistics subject from the pool of conversation classes offered
and proseminars, and every person conducting a linguistics seminar
Master's degree - one literary subject from this pool.
Classes are supposed to:
• deepen the knowledge gained during the course about the history and of Polish literature (in the regional version of positivism, modernism and avant-garde);
• to show the role of literature in creating and consolidating the nineteenth century cultural myths on Polish and Lithuanian side;
• synthetically show similarities and differences in treatment of the above issues in the literature of both nations, resulting from the genre, style, type of narrative, the direction of literary or historical conditions.
Introductory part will present the historical context of Polish-Lithuanian literary and cultural relations (the origin and meaning), including the specificity of Polish strategies of mythologizing Lithuanian history and territory. Participants of the course will learn about the role of themes related to Lithuania within the heritage of the Polish writers of that period, as well as the regional face of positivism, modernism and avant-garde on the territory of the late Grand Principality of Lithuania (press, theater, art). During the analysis of selected works students perfect their skills of critical interpretation of texts and learn about the possibility of applying concepts from other areas of the humanities useful to assess the literary phenomenon. Furthermore, participants will learn about the basics (classic) and new works about the topic of the course with particular emphasis on comparative studies.

- preparing a report on a selected topic – 1 ECTS,
– preparation of a semester paper – 1 ECTS

As a result a student gains knowledge of the following issues:
1. the methodology of research into the connections in literature and culture, applied to the literature of the second half of nineteenth century andand the first decades in the 20th (status and prospects of research, new works accepted in the literary methods of analysis, descriptions and interpretation of events relevant to the cultural development of Polish and Lithuanian culture in this period);
2. Means of functioning of ideological heritage of “Lithuanian school” of romanticism in Polish literature and art in 1864-1939 period and the trends of its modification in the view of philosophical and aesthetic assumptions of positivism, modernism and avant-garde;
3. the role of the close connection of literature and art (painting, music, theater, photography) in shaping the typical late nineteenth and early twentieth century philosophical and aesthetic attitudes in Polish and Lithuanian culture.
During classes, students can use AI tools, e.g. to collect materials, analyze the state of research and create bibliographies. The use of AI tools for interpretation purposes, to create written statements or to develop text fragments is prohibited.

As a result a student gains knowledge of the following issues:
KNOWLEDGE
- knows and deeply understands the place and importance of philology in relation to other humanities as well as the subject and methodological specificity of Baltic philology
- knows and understands the broadened scope of terminology, theories and research methodologies appropriate for literary studies
- knows and deeply understands research methods appropriate for the history of literature and theory of literature
- knows and understands the extended literary terminology in Polish and in the Baltic languages
- knows and understands advanced methods of analysis, interpretation, evaluation and problematisation appropriate for theories and research schools in the field of literary studies
- knows and deeply understands the topics and ideas of selected authors of Lithuanian and Latvian literatures as well as the dynamics of the development of the historical and literary process within both these literatures
- knows and deeply understands the influence of literary works on the history of Baltic cultures
- knows and deeply understands the role of literary reflection in shaping culture
SKILLS
- can search, analyze, evaluate, select and use information from written and electronic sources and formulate critical judgments on this basis
- is able to independently acquire knowledge and develop research skills, following the guidance of a research supervisor, and undertake activities aimed at developing the skills necessary to manage a future professional career
- integrate knowledge from various humanities and apply it in professional situations
- can read, interpret and analyze literary texts, taking into account the historical and cultural context, as well as scientific texts in the target languages
- is able to interpret and critically analyze selected literary phenomena using original approaches, new achievements of the humanities, in order to determine their meaning, social impact and place in the historical and cultural process
- is able to carry out an advanced analysis of the works of other authors, synthesize various ideas and views, select methods, develop and present the results, allowing for an original approach to a selected issue in the field of philological sciences
- can substantively argue using his own views and the views of other authors, formulate conclusions and create synthetic summaries
- is able to communicate with the use of various communication techniques with specialists in the field of the studied philological discipline and other related humanities disciplines as well as with non-specialists in major languages, as well as popularize knowledge about the Baltic countries and their culture

- properly assess the importance of the European and national cultural heritage and take steps to preserve it
Assessment criteria
Ways to verify learning outcomes: assessment of activity and preparation for classes, a report / final thesis on a selected topic.
A student is entitled to two absences per semester, each subsequent absence should be counted in a manner agreed with the academic teacher.
