Professional Skills for Philologists 3020-BA2WPF
The aim of the course is to awaken the student’s sensitivity to issues of correct language usage both in oral speech and in writing, and also to inculcate the habit of checking doubtful forms as well as of paying attention to clarity of formulation at utterance and text level, logical coherence, responsible use of sources, conscientiousness in quoting, terminological consistency and typographical accuracy.
The student learns where to look for answers to his questions concerning correct usage, how to use dictionaries, language companions, internet resources and corpora to this purpose, and how to consult language helplines. Students are also instructed in the methodology of writing scholarly papers and the correct way of shaping references and bibliography.

On completion of the course the student:

– realises the philologist’s responsibility in cultivating correct language usage.
Assessment criteria
Checking activity and current preparation for classes, evaluation of the step-by-step coursework (tests/homework).
Students are allowed up to 2 absences in a semester, each subsequent absence should be credited in a manner agreed with the instructor.
During the course, students may use SI tools e.g. to collect materials, compile research status and create bibliographies. The use of SI tools for interpretative purposes, for the creation of a written statement or for the elaboration of text extracts is excluded.
