Lithuanian language (B1) 3020-BA2NLI
Course in Lithuanian for students of Baltic Philology starting on acquisition of the language at A2 level. Level of proficiency on completion: B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, teaching, assessment.
During the classes the students:
a) deepen their knowledge concerning Lithuanian grammatical structure, acquaint themselves with new structures (active and passive participles, converbs, necessitative participle, definite forms of the adjective, ordinal numbers and participles; fractional numbers, collective numerals; productive derivational patterns; the complex sentence);
b) expand their vocabulary in already familiar thematic domains (everyday life), acquire vocabulary from new thematic domains (everyday life, cultural life, abstract problems);
c) improve their pronunciation, put into practice their knowledge about stress paradigms;
d) consolidate and expand previously acquired communicative competence;
e) construct relatively complicated written statements (informal letters, CV, motivation letter, summary, abstract, essay) and oral statements (discussion, including paraphrases, presenting and arguing one’s point of view, negotiating).
Estimated number of hours the student must devote to achieve the learning outcomes defined for the course:
a) contact hours: 180 h.;
b) current preparation for classes (ca. 2 h. per week): 60 h.;
c) preparation of elaborate class papers (3 per term): preparation of oral presentation / introducing discussions in groups on imposed themes (1 per term); preparation for during-term tests (2 per term), term-final tests (2 per year) and final examination: 60 h.

On completion the student:
(KNOWLEDGE)
- recognizes and properly interprets grammatical structures mastered during the course, uses them consciously in constructing oral and written texts;
(SKILLS)
- follows the main line of thought in a relatively long authentic text (spoken or written);
- easily retrieves information from authentic spoken and written texts, knows how to analyse and summarize it;
- constructs relatively long spontaneous utterances in speech
and writing in predictable professional and social situations;
- spontaneously and fairly adequately reacts in unexpected communicative situations, using restricted linguistic means;
- uses compensatory strategies;
- knows how to solve examination tasks;
(AWARENESS)
- realises the necessity of active participation in the learning process.
Assessment criteria
Final examination, to which the student is admitted on condition of timely obtention of term credits.
A credit must be obtained from every teacher; credit for the winter term must be obtained in the winter re-examination session at the latest, and for the summer term before the date on which the final examination is scheduled.
Conditions of receiving the graded course credit:
a) checking of attendance – a precondition (two absences per
term are allowed; additional absences must be accounted for in agreement with the teacher; an attendance rate below 50% (at every teacher’ classes) bars from obtaining the course credit
b) satisfactory notes for the during-term tests (2 per term ) and term-final tests;
c) oral credit test in the summer term;
d) timely submission of all class papers imposed by the teachers;
e) active participation in classes;
f) current preparation for classes.
The examination comprises a written and an oral part.
The written part is a means to check:
a) understanding of an authentic written text
b) knowledge in the domain of grammatical forms and constructions (gap-filling test, transforming sentences),
c) mastery of vocabulary (defining words, meaning and derivational structure),
d) ability of constructing a relatively long written statement of a particular form on an imposed theme.
The oral part is a means of testing:
a) understanding of an authentic written text and formulation of a fairly long oral statement (talk on topics related to the text: questions of detail, main thought, paraphrasing, formulating and arguing one’s own point of view),
b) communicative competence (communicativeness and creativity, adequacy of linguistic reaction, use of compensatory strategies).
