Practical Knowledge of Czech Language 3005-KL3CZEL
Students will be introduced to the characteristics of Czech pronunciation and the Czech linguistic situations; they will learn Basic grammatical categories (grammatical cases in singular and a selection in plural), tenses, the imperative, commonly used pronouns and syntactic constructs. The students learn vocabulary in various domains of everyday life, as well as ways of addressing interlocutors and typical communication actions. They also gain knowledge of socio-cultural notions and realities of the Czech Republic.

Students gain the following abilities:Knowledge:The students are familiar with Czech pronunciation and the characteristics of Czech sound system. In grammar, they know the most common grammatical cases, three tenses, the imperative mode, modal verbs, commonly used pronouns, and cardinal and ordinal numerals. They know basic vocabulary enabling communication in various every day situations, together with ways of addressing interlocutors of various ages and statuses and the most common formulas of politeness and announcements. They gain a basic set of information on the country and its people, necessary in communication with native language users.Skills:The students are able to communicate uninhibitedly in everyday situations, as well as interpret messages correctly. They succeed in communicating in simple social situations, even when unable to comprehend the entirety of the exchange or to continue the conversation. They are able to grasp the main message of an utterance delivered in short and clearly stated forms and announcements. They can use information included in simple everyday material, such as announcements, advertisement, prospects, menus, timetables and simple personal letters.The students comprehend simple oral utterances and written texts and are able to select important information therein, even when unable to understand the total of words used. They understand phrases and vocabulary most commonly used when describing everyday life (e.g. basic information on personal interests, family, shopping, geography of the area, own profession etc.) They are able to apply a series of phrases so as to describe members of their families and other people, life conditions, education and professional background. The students are able to formulate an informal personal letters, e-mails, short texts on a selected topic; they can summarize oral and written statements. They react correctly both linguistically and extralinguistically in various communication situations. They gain awareness of cultural differences and openness towards cultural variety.
Assessment criteria
Various forms of language course work. Reading and text reproduction, exercises in grammar, listening and reproduction of texts from various sources. Dialogue with the course instructor and in groups. Home assignments in oral and written form. Tests and final tests. Continuous assessment of in-class activity and preparation for class.
