The topic of this lecture is the history of Palestine from the outbreak of the first world war to the outbreak of the second world war. In the beginning there will be description of the situation in Palestine in 19th Century, the reasons for first Jewish migrations there, and the birth and development of Zionism. Then the emergence of the idea of a Jewish state. Then there will be described the role and influence of the Great War and the character of ethnic relations in Palestine before the creation of British mandate.
In the case of the inter war period there will be presented the phases of history of the British mandate in Palestine, it division into two parts, its political and administrative structure. Then we will talk about the rise of the Jewish-Arab antagonism, and about the development of social, political and economic structures of the Jewish community in Palestine. There will also be presented the changes in the British policy in and toward mandate.

Learning outcomes
After this course student should have basic knowledge of the history of Palestine in the second half of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century, especially the history of the Jewish settlement in Palestine. Students should know the basic facts and circumstances of the events which led to the development of the Jewish settlement in Palestina, and later to the development of the Jewish state institutions. They should also have knowledge of history of the local Arab population and its reactions toward the influx of Jews.
Assessment criteria
The basis for evaluation will the attendance, active participation in lectures and a test and the end of the whole course.
