Fashion in Ancient Egypt 2900-HAMC-EL-K1-FAE
During the course, students will learn about clothing in ancient Egypt - they will find out how the dress of ancient Egyptians changed from one period to another, and what elements of it remained constant. What elements of clothing were common to different social groups, and how different elements of a dress could be used to distinguish between them. In addition, students will learn about the dress that have survived to the present day in archaeological data and how they relate to that which is known from iconography, particularly using the example of the royal dress from Tutankhamun's tomb. During the course, the production of textiles in ancient Egypt and the raw materials available to the ancient Egyptians will also be discussed. Furthermore, the problem of interpreting the names of dresses and textiles that appear in ancient Egyptian texts will be outlined, especially the problem of relating them to what we know from art and archaeological material.
