Classical archeology and numismatics 2800-DSKLA
The aim of the course is to prepare students to write master's theses on various aspects of
everyday life in ancient Greece and Rome from the end of the Bronze Age to the 6th century
AD. The topics of the works will focus not only on the products of craftsmanship, but also on
issues of broader cultural significance. The first group of topics will concern the production of
various types of items, e.g. ceramics, glass, products made of various metals, i.e. issues
related to ancient technology. The next group of issues will focus on broader problems, such
as the extraction of mineral resources, broadly understood transport, construction,
architectural order, the basics of architectural planning, outstanding architectural departments
and their importance for the development of ancient culture. The third group of topics are
issues in the field of culture and religion, e.g. the archaeological reality of the cult of the dead,
holidays and celebrations, ancient calendars, otium, etc. The fourth group of topics is related
to the broadly understood ancient numismatics: Greek and Roman, in its various aspects:
finds of coins , iconography on coins, a coin as a propaganda tool, a coin as an archaeological
source.
The principles of writing master's theses, source criticism, the use of various types of
sources, analysis techniques and research methods will also be discussed.
Assessment methods and criteria: the assessment will be based on an oral presentation of parts
of the thesis, prepared chapters and a final test (depending on whether it is the first or second
seminar for the student)
