Searching for information in databases - lecture 2700-P2WIBZW-PSB
The aim of the lecture is to inform students about basic terminology and rules of using methods and techniques of information seeking, searching and retrieval – in traditional and online systems.
Some conditions of searching and retrieval processes are described (users’ needs, accessibility of information sources, structure and organization of the databases, searching tips, information search methods and techniques, internet (web) searching tools, communication with end-user).
Lecture is given in three main blocks:
I. Information seeking, information searching - user’s motivations, information needs, information behavior, information seeking modes – user-oriented paradigm;
II. Information retrieval - searching tips (Boolean operators, truncation, proximity operators) – system oriented paradigm;
III. Information searching in the Internet - different searching tools, for instance: www pages catalogs, global search engines, national-, special-, scientific-, semantic-, meta- search engines, discovery services; open access catalogs; resources and tools of deep/hidden/invisible web .
