Subject description of documents - classification 2700-P1ORDK-PSB
The course concerns the subject description of documents – the essential problem in activity of libraries and information centres. Library-bibliographical classifications are one of the most important tools to this purpose taken, and Universal Decimal Classification is one of the most important among them. Different conceptions of the knowledge universum division, applied in most often practiced classifications, are presented. In particular history, grammar and UDC pragmatics are being discussed. During the practical part of classes students are taking attempts of classifying documents, but their solutions are comparing with solutions applied in the national bibliography. The course is ending with the consideration about the possibility and methods of using classification languages – UDC particular – in automated library systems.

After completing the course:
KNOWLEDGE:
– student has the expertise in the scope of the book studies and information science,
– student knows the names for the most important world classifications and surnames of their creators,
– student is able to describe main features of the most important classifications,
– student is able to describe the division of the knowledge universum applied in the decimal classification.
SKILLS:
– student is able to find the retrieval characteristic expressed in the form of the classification symbol in the bibliographic description of the document,
– student is able also to describe the kinds of the applied symbols and their levels of detail,
– student is able to assign the document by the subject characteristics in the form of the UDC symbols,
– student is able also to read out and to analyze the classification symbol found in the national bibliography or in the library catalogue.
OTHER COMPETENCES:
– student appreciates mattering the open access to library materials and the role of library classifications, which they play in such library collection organization.
