The seminar "Interpretations of photography" begins with a theoretical introduction, during which students become familiar with the first method of analysis and interpretation of photography by Piotr Sztompka. The indicated theory is extended to consider photography by Susan Sontag and Roland Barthes. This part ends with mid-term work, which is the first text to interpret visual material.
The second part of the course concerns the criticism of photography based on the method of Terry Barrett. This stage is extended with texts on image analysis of selected authors.
An important point of the seminar is to develop the skills of reading photographs and communicating using images.
The seminar also refers to information on the theory and practice of visual literacy and visual framing, which helps to use the image as a method for analyzing the content of media messages.
Classes end with a written essay interpreting the chosen contemporary photography.

KNOWLEDGE
After completing the course "Photography Interpretations" the student will have knowledge about the most important theories about reading and interpreting photography i.a. by S. Sontag, R. Barthes, T Barett and G. Rose. He will learn about the requirements for the construction of scientific and popular science text, whose main theme is photography.
SKILLS
After completing the course, the student will acquire the ability to critically analyze, evaluate and interpret the photographic image and the construction of the statement containing the most important theses of the discussed photo. The student will also have the ability to prepare the article on their own, as well as public presentation of conclusions.
Assessment criteria
The condition for completing the course is to prepare a written work during the classes and a written final work. The final grade is the arithmetic mean of the two components. Both grades must be positive to pass the course. It is not possible to improve the positive rating. Activity during the classes gives the possibility to increase the final grade by a half or the whole grade.
The student has the right to two unexcused absences. Since the subject as a seminar belongs to the group of compulsory subject, an attendance of more than 50% is required to pass it, while each third and subsequent absence (up to the required 50%) must be passed with knowledge of the material on the day of absence.
