The course is an introduction to subject indexing of different types of documents, with particular emphasis on the publishers' needs.
The course covers:
1. terminology and theoretical and practical basis of subject indexing;
2. the basic indexing tools used in Polish and international libraries (KABA, National Library of Poland Descriptors, Universal Decimal Classification, Library of Congress Subject Headings);
3. the basic indexing tools used in the book industry (BISAC Subject Headings, Thema).

After completing the course, students:
KNOWLEDGE:
- know and understand the basic terminology in editing, book studies, and related disciplines (K_W02).
- know and understand the methods of analysis and interpretation of cultural objects, selected traditions, theories, and schools in library and information science, especially in editing and other related disciplines (K_W05).
- know and understand industrial property rights and copyright and the rules for the creation and development of different forms of publishing enterprises (K_W06).
SKILLS:
- are capable of tackling and analyzing research problems, adopting the appropriate methods and tools to solve them, including information and communication technology, applying knowledge of editing, book studies, and related disciplines (K_U02).
- Students are capable of presenting argumentation using their views and those of other authors, presenting research outcomes, coming to conclusions, and preparing Polish summaries in library and information science, especially in editing (K_U04).
- are capable of planning and organizing individual and group work (K_U07).
COMPETENCES:
- are ready to initiate and actively participate in cultural heritage conservation activities, with particular emphasis on the literary heritage (K_K02).
- are ready to care about the traditions of editing professions (K_K04).
