Classification and Knowledge Organization - lecture 2700-L-IN-Z4KOW
Lecture topics:
1. Classification KOS's: character structure; construction of classification KOS's: notation systems, organization of lexis, grammars of classification languages.
2. Taxonomic organization of information and knowledge: classification theory;
structural and functional types of classification languages; enumerative and faceted structures.
3. The most important library and bibliographic classifications: the beginnings of literature classification; modern classification standards: DDC, LoCC, UDC, BC.
Topics of laboratory classes:
1. UDC tables as the dictionary of the information-retrieval language. Construction of the tables: main tables and auxiliary tables. The role of the alphabetical subject index.
2. The UDC symbol as a characteristics of document content. Different kinds of symbols and the ways of creating them.
3. The aims and the ways of compound symbols creating. Signs taken for combining and subgrouping symbols.
4. The role of auxiliary subdivisions in UDC and their characters (indicators). Principles of organising auxiliary subdivisions.
5. Decimal classification in the Polish national bibliography – analysis of chosen examples.

Knowledge: the student should know the specialized terminology of the domain of knowledge organization, especially dealing with classification and taxonomic knowledge organization systems, the basic structures of this kind of KOS and the principles of their construction, the evolution of library and bibliographic classification and its relationship with the evolution of science classification, construction and scope of basic library, bibliographic and documentary classification systems.
Skills: the student should be able to identify the basic characteristics and kinds of classification KOS. He/she should be able to analyze the structure and principles of using different types of classification KOS. He/she should be able to apply the principles of construction of enumeration and facet classification.
Assessment criteria
Lecture - final written exam, covering the material presented during the lecture and indicated literature of the subject.
Labs - final test.
