Subject indexing of documents 2700-L-IN-Z3ID
The lecture aims to present theoretical issues related to the indexing of bibliographic resources using subject heading languages and descriptors. It covers the following topics:
- terminology and theoretical basis of information retrieval languages;
- keywords and tags – advantages and disadvantages in terms of indexing and searching;
- the most important subject heading languages in Poland and abroad;
- selected thesauri;
- the most important facts from the history of subject indexing;
- subject headings and descriptors - advantages and disadvantages.
The lab is devoted to the practice of indexing bibliographic resources using the KABA subject headings and the National Library of Poland Descriptors. It covers the following topics:
- subject analysis;
- the practice of bibliographic resources indexing.

Knowledge: The graduate knows and understands
- facts, objects and phenomena, as well as the theories describing them, specific to library and information science and sciences of social communication and media, their subject specifics (K_W01).
- know and understand the basic terminology in media and communication studies, especially in the subdiscipline of library and information science and other related disciplines (K_W03).
- know and understand the principles of library systems: general and specific to respective fields of research and professional activity (K_W05).
- know and understand the processes of creation, management, and quality assessment of document collections, and procedures and tools to access them (K_W07).

Assessment criteria
Laboratory:
1. Class attendance (up to 20%):
- all - 20%;
- one unexcused absence - 10%;
- two unexcused absences - 5%;
- more than two unexcused absences - 0%.
2. Written test (up to 80%):
- 17-18 pts. - 80%;
- 15-16 pts. - 65%;
- 13-14 pts. - 55%;
- 11-12 pts. - 45%;
- 9-10 pts. - 35%;
- below 9 pts. - 29%.
Final grades:
5: 91-100%;
4,5: 81-90%;
4: 71-80%;
3,5: 61-70%;
3: 50-60%;
2: below 50%.
Lecture:
Oral exam during an exam session (only those who have passed the lab "Subject indexing of documents" will be admitted to the exam).
Final positive grades cannot be improved.
