Proseminar of methodology 1 2700-L-IN-Z2PM1
The aim of the course is to familiarize the students with basic issues on research methodology in library and information science and related fields. Knowledge acquired during the course will be useful not only during the university studies, but also in professional life. The course will help students familiarize both with theory and practice; apart from the theoretical issues, the students will familiarize with the principles of academic writing and big texts editing as well as with the reference management softwares.
During the course the following issues will be discussed:
Part 1.
- The field of science and technology classification
- Systematic literature review
- Research process
- Selected methods and tools applied in quantitative research
- Selected methods and tools applied in qualitative research
- Academic writing
Work on a big text in MS Word
Part 2.
- Designing quantitative and qualitative research - similarities and differences
- Classic research process and its practical application
- Selected strategies and research schemes
- The most common methodological errors
- Book studies’ research methods and their contemporary applications
- Analysis of qualitative and quantitative data

Learning outcomes
KNOWLEDGE:
Student gains a basic knowledge on tools, techniques, and research methods applied in library and information science and related fields.
Student will learn about: principles of academic writing, big texts editing as well as reference management.
SKILLS:
Student has basic research skills; s/he is able to formulate and analyse research problems.
Student can critically analyze the research methodology applied by other researchers in their studies.
Student can use reference management software.
COMPETENCES:
Student is aware of the importance of a well chosen methodology for the purpose for her/his own study.
Student is prepared for the BA research seminar: s/he knows how to search for a relevant literature, conduct her/his own research, and prepare BA dissertation.
Assessment criteria
Part 1.
Preparation for classes (readings), active participation in discussion as well as task assigned during classes (60%); individual work - two small inter-term projects (40%).
Part 2.
Continuous assessment based on substantive preparation for classes and activity during classes.
The condition of passing classes is obtaining a sufficient number of attendance, activity (50% of the grade) and preparation of the written essay (50% of the grade) within the deadline.
One unjustified and one excused absence in a semester is allowed. The student has the opportunity to make up for the absence by passing the oral exam about the topic discussed during the classes.
It is not possible to improve positive grades.
