The professionalization in journalism 2700-L-FAK-D-PRDZ
The processes constituting professionalization of journalism are presented during these lectures from the point of view of analysis of their structural, functional and normative determinants,decisive for social, legal and ethical status of the profession of a journalist. Subsequent phases of evolution of the dualistic concept of the profession as developing organization and structural and behavioral attributes of categories of its status are also described and analyzed later on. Further on all factors determining professional identity of journalists and the set of constitutive elements of their professional ideology, as well as processes of individual and common socialization, which determine the attributes of the profession of journalists of the cognitive, normative and ethical character. Subject of this analysis are also factual, social and creative competences of journalists, recognized as basic components of the professional standards. Understood as the set of necessary professional skills and knowledge acquired by students in the process of their education and practical stages in professional media institutions.

As a result of attendance at these lectures, the student:
Knowledge
- has basic knowledge about the professional model of journalism and its components;
-knows his internal rights and duties within the structure of the media organization;
- knows all the specific formal-legal aspects of the following terms: profession, regulated profession, free profession, public confidence profession;
Skills
- practical ability of noticing and recognizing creative and legal faults and weak-points of the press (media) materials;
- practical ability of making proper balance of possible benefits and harms that may stem out of publication of a given press (media) material and asses his responsibility for it;
- practical ability to make proper use of his own rights and duties both within the media organization and in the public service of the society;
Other competences
- knows, and is able to explain and compare legal status of journalists in different media systems;
- knows, and is able to compose his own ethical code, based on the existing ethical codes of journalists.

Assessment criteria:
A written assessment or a final paper - depending on the form of chosen by the student. A written assessment or a final paper covers knowledge acquired during participation in lectures. A prerequisite for passing is achieving a minimum of 60% of the required score.
