The aim of the course is to familiarize the students with research methodology in information studies and related fields. Knowledge acquired during the course will be useful not only during the university studies, but also in professional life. The course will help familiarize both with theory and practice; it will show how an appropriate methodology influences the research and its results.
During the course the following issues will be discussed:
- The field of science and technology classification
- Systematic literature review
- Research process
- Methods and tools applied in quantitative research
- Methods and tools applied in qualitative research
- Qualitative data analysis
- Quantitative data analysis
- Academic writing
- Bibliometrics and altmetrics (basic)

KNOWLEDGE:
1. Student gains a basic knowledge on tools, techniques, and research methods applied in information studies and related fields.
2. Student is able to reflect deeply on the research process stages in social sciences.
SKILLS:
1. Student has basic research skills; s/he is able to formulate and analyse research problems.
2. Student is able to choose an appropriate methodology for the purpose of her/his own study.
3. Student is able to choose appropriate tools for research data analysis; s/he is able to analyse data and present the results.
4. Student can critically analyze the research methodology applied by other researchers in their studies.
COMPETENCES:
1. Student is aware of the importance of a well chosen methodology for the purpose for her/his own study.
2. Student is prepared for the BA research seminar and for conducting her/his own research.
Assessment criteria
Preparation for classes (readings), active participation in discussion as well as task assigned during classes (60%); individual work - three small inter-term projects (40%).
