Linguistics as a discipline of the humanities. Relations between linguistics and other disciplines. Categorisation of linguistics according to a research object.
Signs and language signs (units). Classification of signs. Definition of a language sign/ unit.
Natural vs artificial languages. Types of artificial languages. Hierarchical structure of a language. Language units: non-significant (phonemes), significant: morphemes, lexemes, word-forms, syntactic constructions (syntax groups and sentences). Basic relations among the units. Subsystems of language: phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic. The semantics. Reality mapping in language. Meaning as a conventional relations. Meaning scope vs. meaning content. Presentation of meaning.
Pragmatics – conditions of language communication. Functions of the language (statements, texts).
Language as a cultural phenomenon.

A graduate can and understands:
- basic theories and methodology of linquistics, adequate for the needs of information architecture systems and the tools of language control (K_W02)
- basic linguistics terminology,
- methods of analysis and interpretation of language as a product of culture and a tool of developing content characteristics of documents (K_W03)
A graduate can:
- identify and solve detailed research problems of information architecture, using knowledge and methodology of linguistics (K_U01, K_U03)
- use linguistics terminology in ten scope needed for library and information science (K_U01)
- develop linguistic knowledge and competencies in regard of information architecture needs (K_U09)
A graduate is ready to:
- evaluate critically his/her linguistic knowledge, in regard of work on information resources (K_K01)
