Point and line pattern analysis in R 2400-ZEWW935
The analysis of regional economic phenomena which uses aggregated data often produces incorrect results, as it does not take into account space features, spatial heterogeneity, neighbourhood structure and so on. Spatial econometrics overcomes this problem. Analysis of point and line patterns requires specific data (geo-localised data) and specific statistical packages.
Point and line data have a wide range of economic applications (business locations, transport economics, real estate market, etc.).
The following topics will be discussed in the course:
1. Spatial data - introduction, creation, visualisation
2. Ripley's K-function - definition, advantages/disadvantages, application
3. Point patterns: classification, analysis of type I and II properties
4. Point process models
5. Line patterns: definition, visualisation, point pattern on lines
6. Spatio-temporal analysis

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course, the student:
- has knowledge of methods and tools for studying point and line data;
- knows how to work with spatial data (analysis, visualisation, modelling);
- is able to apply the acquired knowledge in practice - conduct a research and present the conclusions of this research in the form of a report.
Assessment criteria
Research project (60%) - prepared in groups of 2. The project must include:
- Introduction + literature review
- Description of the data
- Research problem, objectives of the study
- Estimation, model diagnostics
- Conclusions
Review of article (40%) - written review of the article assigned by the teacher. The review must include a description and analysis of:
- the aim and scope of the study;
- methods used in the study (description of methods + own critical analysis of the method used);
- the results of the study (what worked, what did not, whether the objective was achieved);
- an overall assessment of the text, remarks, comments.
