AI in teaching English to young learners 2300-KJO-AL
The course explores the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in teaching English to young learners. It introduces both theoretical knowledge and practical hands-on sessions, discussions on the role of AI in language learning, along with the ethical considerations involved. Students will learn about various AI tools and their effectiveness in the classroom context.
The course covers practical skills such as evaluating AI tools, designing lessons using AI and implementing AI-based strategies to teach language skills. It emphasises collaboration, communication and adapting AI tools to meet the diverse needs of learners.
Students are encouraged to participate in reflective discussions on the benefits and challenges of using AI in early childhood education. The course also promotes the ethical and responsible use of AI, raising awareness of data privacy issues and biases. By the end of the course, students will be prepared to effectively integrate artificial intelligence into their teaching practices, enhancing the learning experience of their students. This balance of theory and practice makes it a valuable addition to any teacher's professional development. Nowadays, working with AI tools is an essential part of the language teacher's workshop, it is a big help for the teacher and makes lessons more interesting for the learner.

In terms of knowledge, students will be able to:
● Comprehend the basic concepts and principles of AI and its role in language learning and teaching, particularly in early education settings.
● Recognise the ethical issues related to the use of AI in education and the ethical responsibilities of educators.
● Understand the theoretical foundations of using AI to enhance language teaching to young learners.
● Identify the different types of AI tools available for language teaching and learning.
In terms of skills, students will be able to:
● Assess the effectiveness and suitability of different AI applications in the classroom context.
● Critically evaluate various AI tools and resources for teaching English to young learners.
● Apply AI tools to enhance and personalise English language learning experiences for young learners.
In terms of social competence, students will be able to:
● Effectively communicate about the role and impact of AI in education.
● Participate in reflective discussions about the benefits and challenges of using AI for language teaching in early education settings.
● Work collaboratively with peers to use AI tools in language teaching and learning.
● Responsibly apply AI tools in teaching English to young learners.
Assessment criteria
To pass the course, the student must complete all the following requirements:
● actively participate in class,
● pass oral and written assignments in class,
● complete a mid-term group project,
● prepare a final project.
The final grade will be based on:
- class participation (20%)
- assignments (30%)
- mid-term group mini project (20%)
- final project (30%)
Two absences are allowed.
