Specialisation seminar (proseminar) - Criminology 2200-1F068
Proseminar in criminology enables:
(1) The contribution of criminology to understanding the process of constructing criminal acts and preventing unwanted behavior.
(2) The significance and place of criminology among other sciences with an indication of the relationship with penal sciences (e.g. constitutional law, human rights, criminal law, criminal and civil procedure, criminal executive law, misdemeanor law, penitentiary law, victimology, penology family law), sociology, social psychology, or psychiatry.
(3) Explains how and depending on what the definition of crime, deviation and the content of social pathology changes. It introduces the importance of criminal, penal and penitentiary policy.
(4) Explains how and why theoretical explanations of phenomena defined as crimes and those considered as pathology are developed and how this affects the justice system.
(5) Provides practical skills in the use of basic criminological concepts in the consideration of issues in criminal law and criminal law enforcement.

Learning outcomes
The Proseminar in Criminology provides students with Knowledge, Skills and Values. They will be able to:
Knowledge:
1) Outline the reasons for criminalizing specific behaviors.
2) Demonstrate knowledge of criminological theories and critically reflect on ways of explaining the origins of prohibited behavior and their impact on criminal policy.
3) Demonstrate knowledge of criminological and victimological ways of explaining phenomena defined as pathological.
Skills:
1) Use specific criminological theories when examining the causes and means of prevention of specific deviant conduct.
2) Critically review statistical and descriptive data on crime.
3) Critically analyze the relationship between the use of non-academic forms of social control and the statistical scale of crime.
Attitudes:
1) Students will at least deepen their understanding that deciding whether there is a crime and administering justice is not simple and unambiguous, even though it is defined by law.
2) Also that the role of criminal law is limited. Its use for political purposes is a sign of an inability to govern and a lack of skills in solving social problems. Criminal law may, but rarely, assist the process of solving problems; more often it creates them when it serves as an instrument for creating the appearance of eliminating social evils.
3) The lecture should give an understanding of and the limitations and challenges facing criminology. It can explain the reasons why behaviors are considered unwanted and pathological; it can, unfortunately, when used perversely serve to justify the use and abuse of criminal law and criminal policy for current politics.
Assessment criteria
The basis for assessment is: active participation in classes (55%) and preparing an introduction to the discussion on one of the proseminar topics (45%). The preparation should include both the presentation of the substantive content of the given topic, and indicate topics for polemical discussion during the proseminar based on examples related to the current jurisprudence of the courts, the CT, ECHR, etc.
