Organisation and functioning of the US foreign service 2104-M-D2OFUS-DW
The aim of the classes is to enable students to gain basic knowledge about the organization and functioning of the foreign service of the United States and to understand their specifics in comparison with foreign services of other countries (including Poland). The content of the classes will cover historical and legal and organizational issues related to the development of the U.S. foreign service, the analysis of its organizational structure, tasks, conditions and duties of the U.S. diplomat, creating a profile of a member of the U.S. foreign service, analysis of the instruments of U.S. diplomacy and cases of its practical use in U.S. foreign policy.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion, the student understands the meaning and content of the term "foreign service" and its specificity in the context of US foreign policy. He knows the legal conditions of this service, its requirements and the organization and rules of recruitment - also their historical evolution. He understands the conceptual relationship and interdependence of U.S. foreign policy and foreign service as its professional executive tool. He/she is able to broaden his/her knowledge and analyze current issues related to the subject matter of the classes.

Assessment criteria
1. attendance at classes (including activity) and knowledge of the recommended and self-researching literature shown in the discussion.
2. individual project - written work - 1000 characters (with the title page, footnotes and bibliography - not included in the expected volume), given no later than the end of the class. Details, including the manner and mode of submission and the list of topics, will be discussed during the first lesson. Weight in the final evaluation - 50%.
3. final (written) credit - 50%.
