Political Economy of Global South States 2104-M-D2EPPP-SRG
The aim of the course is a comprehensive introduction to the debate on development and political economy and the global South. It covers major topics such as development trends, competition in international markets, financial integration and crisis management in the last quarter of the 20th century and the first two decades of the 21st century.
A common misconception about the economic and financial crises in the global South is that the causes of the problems lie in the inability of policymakers to transform their economies in line with the demands of Western models. This is why the South cannot catch up with the developed nations of the North. This position ignores the interdependencies not only between countries, but also the political dilemmas faced by emerging markets in shaping economic growth strategies.
The course will be based on an interdisciplinary approach using comparative political economy, political science and development studies. It will develop various case studies to analyze both the day-to-day functioning of global phenomena and the reflection of global economic conditions in major emerging markets. It will help students understand the main issues and problems faced by decision makers in emerging markets. Providing a multi-level discussion of developments in recent decades, the course will provide a comparative and historical lens for analyzing the political economic transformation in the global South.
