Module- Issues [social cohesion] 2100-SPP-L-D3MOIS
The module aims to familiarize students with the crucial issue of social cohesion in the context of social policy. Through the examination of this topic, students will realize the multidimensional nature of any issue addressed by social policy – both at the cognitive, political, and normative levels. The scope of the course includes the following topics: material inequalities versus educational, health, and cultural access inequalities; the spatial aspect of social inequalities; the concepts of center-periphery; social capital and social bonds in relation to social cohesion; socio-political divisions and their dynamics. The module also aims to develop the competency that enables students to speak fluently and spontaneously in English, easily finding appropriate vocabulary.

4. The Spatial Aspect of Social Inequalities. Core-Periphery Concepts Health Inequalities in Central and Eastern Europe
5. Health Inequalities in Central and Eastern Europe
6. Sociopolitical Divisions and Their Dynamics

1. Amartya Sen and his understanding of inequality / Views of B.R. Ambedkar on inequality / C. Wright Mills and his critical theory of social inequality. Mapping selected theoretical concepts concerning social inequalities.
2. Educational inequalities – experiences of persons with disabilities at the University of Warsaw (TBC).
3. Inequalities in access to culture in Central and Eastern Europe. Student presentations.
4. Spatial aspects of social inequality in Warsaw – walking in the city.
5. The role and potential for skill development in peaceful coexistence and social cohesion: empathy.
6. Emotions and affect as sources, outcomes, and resistance to inequality: collective emotional resilience.
7. Consultation on written work.

Knowledge: The graduate knows and understands:
- Advanced methods of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting quantitative and qualitative data used in the process of creating and analyzing political processes (K_W02).
- Advanced functioning of social and political institutions in specific areas of social and public policy, with particular emphasis on education, public health, social welfare, housing, labor market, social insurance, family policy, and migration and integration policy (K_W05).
- Normative and ethical conditions of scientific and practical activities in the field of social policy and public policy (K_W08).
Skills: The graduate is able to:
- Precisely identify the economic, social, economic, and cultural determinants of specific social phenomena and apply approaches and theories in interpreting the detailed relationships between phenomena (K_U03).
- Use English at the C1 level* (K_U09).
