The development and evolution of cities, the functions they perform and the role of urban space in social and economic life. Analysis of the links between quality of life, mobility and the environment. Comparison of different strategies and effects of transforming and dividing urban spaces. Concepts of sustainable development and integrated management of technical and social infrastructure systems. Case studies of selected examples of successful and unsuccessful transformation of urban centres and contemporary development challenges.

Learning outcomes
KNOWLEDGE: Upon completion of the teaching programme, the student should be able to characterise the main elements of development policy for urban centres, indicate examples of objectives and effects of spatial and socio-economic transformations. He/she should also indicate the roles and tasks of selected actors influencing the development of cities, as well as priorities and scenarios that will determine the shaping of cities in the future.
SKILLS: Upon completion of the programme, the student will be able to independently find sources of regulations defining urban development processes, identify advantages and disadvantages of implemented development strategies and propose elements increasing the effectiveness of urban policies or correcting them due to changes in priorities.
OTHER COMPETENCES: Upon completion of the programme the student demonstrates: understanding of different models of management and creation of urban policies and can independently evaluate them from the point of view of different groups of inhabitants and other stakeholders.
