Spatial management and development in rural areas 1900-7-KPW-UR
The aim of the course is to introduce students to the problems related to the development and management of rural areas in Poland and related challenges: demographic, social, environmental, spatial and economic.
During the course, selected determinants of spatial changes in rural areas in Poland will be presented: economic, demographic, social and natural. Students learn about contemporary trends in rural development and the specificity of spatial management in rural areas. Particular attention is paid primarily to the functional and spatial changes in the Polish countryside since the beginning of 90s. XX c.
Selected types of rural communes in Poland will also be analyzed according to their dominant functions: housing and commercial services, tourism, forestry, and agriculture. They are analyzed from the point of view of the demographic, social and economic situation and changes in the natural environment.
Lecture contents:
1. Basic concepts, definitions of rural areas and ways of their delimitation.
2. Factors determining the economic success of the rural areas in Poland.
3. Agricultural farm - term, structure, layout.
4. Management the agricultural space: size and ownership structure of farms in Poland.
5. Infrastructural resources of farms.
6. Multifunctionality of rural areas in Poland - contemporary trends
7. Selected social problems in the rural areas.
8. Renewal and revitalization processes in the rural areas. Specialization of villages.
9. Analysis of selected types of rural communes in Poland according to their dominant function:
- housing and commercial services,
- tourist,
- forest,
- agricultural (commercial and semi-subsistence agriculture).
Some of the classes take place in the field during a trip to one of the rural communes near Warsaw.
The estimated number of hours that the student must spend to achieve the learning outcomes defined for the subject.
Course: 4 x 25 h = 100 h, including:
30 h. - in direct contact with the lecturer, participation in classes and a field trip
70 h. - student's own contribution, including: 25 h. - preparation of a paper for class, 10 h. - reading the literature, 25 h. - preparation for a written test, 10 h. - preparation for class discussions

Assessment criteria
Active participation in class discussions, preparation and presentation of a paper on a selected topic and obtaining a positive grade from the final written exam.
Final exam: written test consisting of closed and open questions. 50% of the points are required to obtain a positive assessment.
Retake exam is based on the same rules as the first one.
