Urban Areas 1900-3-OZU-GL
The aim of the course is to introduce the student to the subject of the diversity of processes taking place in urbanized areas in different regions of the world. The issues presented during the classes allow for the interpretation and understanding of the conditions that have shaped cities in the past and today. First of all, the socio-economic, political and cultural conditions are discussed.
Individual meetings are devoted to presentations, analyzes and discussions on the following subject areas:
1. The city as a research object. Changes in the approach to the geography of cities
2. What does the contemporary appearance of the city tell us about? Contemporary trends in changes in the structure and functioning of cities
3. Urbanization in the world. What are the characteristics of urbanization in Europe and North America, Africa, Asia, South America?
4. How do we study urban settlement networks and systems?
5. Why are big cities so important? Metropolization, metropolises, world cities, global cities, post-metropolises
6. Contemporary research on socio-spatial differentiation? The importance of the social geography of cities.
7. Contemporary processes taking place in cities - student presentations
8. Contemporary processes - a tour of Warsaw
Note: Individual topics are covered in more than one class.
The estimated number of hours that the student must spend to achieve the learning outcomes defined for the subject.
Seminar: 3 ECTS - including:
1 ECTS - in direct contact with the lecturers, participation in classes and in a field trip
2 ECTS - student's own contribution, including: 1 ECTS preparation of papers for classes and discussions, 1 ECTS preparation for a written test

The student knows and understands:
- main research directions, concepts and achievements of contemporary city geography
- complex social, political and cultural processes in urban communities
- regional differentiation of urbanization processes taking place in the world
- the impact of globalization on the development of urban areas
- city-wide processes
Social skills
The student is able to:
- use theoretical knowledge to describe and solve a research problem
- interpret the importance of the influence of socio-economic and cultural political factors on the functioning of given urban areas
- transfer geographic knowledge to different audiences
- use detailed geographical terminology in Polish and in a foreign language at the B2 + level
Attitudes
The student can:
- cooperate and work in a group
- shows respect and openness to cultures developed in other cultural and civilization circles
- takes actions in an entrepreneurial manner in the preparation and implementation of social, environmental and economic projects
Assessment criteria
The condition for passing the course is active participation in class discussions (25% of the grade), preparation and presentation of two papers on a given topic (40%) and obtaining a positive grade for the final written exam (40%). 50% of the points are required to obtain a positive assessment.
Practical placement
Internships are not foreseen.
