Management and development of protected areas 1900-1-ZOCH-SE
During the course, the issues of management of protected areas as well as legal and institutional conditions related to their functioning are discussed. Cases of infrastructural development of the protected areas in Poland, Europe and the world are analyzed.
Lecture topics:
1. Categories of protected areas (according to IUCN) and their protection.
2. Planning concepts of the protected areas.
3. Types of tourist infrastructure. Positive and negative examples of accomodation infrastructure located within the protected areas. Types of services available in parks and reserves.
4. Development related to non-tourist human activity in protected areas (eg settlement, agriculture).
5. Management of buffer zones of national parks and reserves.
6. Examples of the management of areas with different types of environment, including: forest, polar, savanna ecosystems.
Estimated number of hours that the student must spend to achieve the learning outcomes defined for the subject:
Lecture: 1 ECTS (30 hours) - including 15 hours in direct contact with the teacher, i.e. participation in classes, 15 hours - student's own contribution, including 5 hours reading the literature, 10 hours preparation for a written test.

The student knows the management methods in protected areas of various types (in Poland and in the world).
The student is able to list the types of infrastructure located in protected areas.
The student is able to identify the problems that arise in the management of protected areas.
The student is able to identify the advantages and disadvantages of various management systems practiced in protected areas around the world.
The classes are aimed at shaping the attitude of respect towards nature, perceiving the diversity of human activities related to various categories of protected areas
The classes are designed to shape students' openness to various practices and management methods in protected areas, resulting from cultural differences.
Assessment criteria
Written test consisting of open and closed questions. 50% of the points are required to obtain a positive assessment.
Retake exam is based on the same rules as the first one.
