Introductory issues. General understanding of non-military aspects and dimensions of security and its evolutions. Factors decisive for the significance of non-military aspects of security in state security. Theoretical framework – security sectors and securitisation theory (Copenhagen School)
Ecological security .
Definitions. Securitisation of ecological issues in theory and practice – climate change and other global ecological challenges as a problem of state and international security; ecological security in the Anthropocene.
Water, food and health security
Definitions. Water crisis as a threat to state security. International water disputes. Political dimension of food security. Impact of armed conflicts on food security. Health security and stability of states and international relations. Epidemic and pandemic. Civilisational diseases. Case study: Covid-19.
Demographic security
Definitions. Demographic resources as an element of state power. Migration as a challenge for international security. Migration crises and instrumentalization of migration. Refugees as a security issue. Case study: Palestinian refugees and their repatriation rights to Israel/Palestine.
Information security (2 meetings)
Contemporary information environment and its susceptibility for disinformation. Propaganda and disinformation – main tools and mechanisms. Foreign interference in elections. Social media platforms and their relations with state institutions. Disinformation tactics and cognitive bias. Case studies: US presidential elections of 2016 and COVID-19 pandemic. Defence and protection mechanisms. New technologies (AI in particular) and their potential in context of information security.
Economic security (selected aspects)
Definitions and historical evolution of the issue. Significance of interdependencies and globalisation. Impact of technological development on state security. International trade – security of communications lines and supply chains. Economic sanctions.
Energy security (3 meetings)
Theoretical framework: Economic value and meaning of the energy. Energy sector – general characteristics and its role in state security. Problems of the energy infrastructure development. Energy security and its determinants in the globalized international environment. International cooperation in energy field and its importance for national economies. Future of energy sector: fossil fuels vs. renewable energy
Identification of good practices in building of energy policy of the state. Energy security and energy policy – links and connections. Good practices in building of the energy policy (global, European and Polish standards). Defining main entities and stakeholders of energy policy. Megatrends in energy sphere.
Poland position on EU climate and energy policy (workshop and discussion). Impact of integration processes on functioning of polish energy. European challenges vs. Polish expectations. EU strategy until 2050 - Green Deal and Fit for 55 package. Energy clusters – dispersed (distributed) energy production and its impact on energy security and climate. Overview of new energy technologies (hydrogen, nuclear technologies)

Assessment criteria
Description of requirements related to participation in classes, including the permitted number of explained absences: No entry requirements, two absences permitted
Principles for passing the classes and the subject (including resit session): Optionally: final written test or paper/essay; resit session – oral exam
Methods for the verification of learning outcomes: in case of written test: approapriate forms of the question in final assessment (consisted of three sections – multiple choice section; short (one sentence) answers section; short essay section)
Evaluation criteria: final test of paper/essay – 90%, attendance and activeness – 10 %)
