Designing and planning research / preparing IRP, grant acquisition and management 1500-SDN-PIPB-NOKIRI
The aim of the course is to prepare doctoral students to independently plan their research and apply for grants. Doctoral students will be introduced to the logic of research funding in contemporary science, including the criteria of excellence. The classes will introduce the principles of constructing externally funded research projects and the criteria for their evaluation, including: the logic of a grant proposal as a specific scientific text, of constructing a cost estimate and a schedule. The basic principles of implementing and accounting for grant projects will be explained. The course will also discuss the most important external sources of funding with emphasis on those available to social scientists (anthropology, sociology), types of grants and general principles of applying for research project funding. Special attention will be given to grants funded by the National Science Centre and the European Commission and other sources of funding for ethnographic and qualitative research.
Topics:
1. Principles of funding of contemporary science - the logic of the system.
2. National and international grant agencies. National and international calls.
3. How to prepare for applying for a grant? Preliminary research, literature query, selection of an appropriate source.
4. Rules of the call for proposal (with examples of specific calls).
5. Project evaluation criteria as a basic guideline for the authors of the grants.
6. Principles of realization of and of accounting for the research projects financed from various sources.
7. Workshop around the Individual Research Plan.

A requisite for successful completion of the course is an attendance in class and the description of the grant project prepared by the doctoral student in accordance with the guidelines provided during the course and assessed positively. 1 absence is allowed.
