Glaciers and glaciations on Earth 1300-WLZZ-OG
Research history on glaciers. Causes of glaciation on Earth. Ice in nature, formation of glaciers, glacial system, classification of glaciers. Thermal regime and water cycle in glaciers. Accumulation, ablation and glacier mass balance. Glacial erosion, transport and deposition. Glacial geomorphology. Dating methods of the past glacial events. Methodology of palaeoglacier geometry reconstruction. Using palaeoglaciers for past climate reconstruction. Continental and mountain glaciation (especially in Europe) during the last Ice Age.

Learning outcomes
After the course student knows the principles of glaciology, can characterize glacial relief and sediments, can reconstruct the basic elements of the palaeoglacier using simple empirical models and analysing the geomorphologic map; knows the palaeogeography of the continental and mountain glaciation in Europe during the last Ice Age, can characterize the relations between changes of glacier’s geometry and climatic fluctuations.
K_W01 - the student has knowledge of the processes and factors shaping the Earth in the field of Quaternary geology, geomorphology, stratigraphy, sedimentology, palaeontology, geochemistry, mineralogy, petrology, geology of deposits
K_U06 - the student is able to briefly characterize the geological conditions of individual regions of Poland and selected regions of the world, can compare Polish areas in terms of abundance in mineral and rock deposits, can explain the genesis in relation to the geological history of the development of a given area and its geological structure
K_K05 - the student is able to present and explain the social and environmental aspects of the practical application of the acquired
Assessment criteria
Final written exam. As part of retake - written test.
Practical placement
none
