Image analysis and graphical interpretation of geological data 1300-WAOGIG
1. Vector graphics: composing sketch maps, cross-sections and geological profiles based on selected sheets of The Detailed Geological Map of Poland 1:25000 covering the Sudetes region (SW Poland). Work with layers manager, creating objects, the problem of colour space (CMYK vs. RGB). Application of selected options of the QGIS software to fast composing of overview maps.
2. Raster graphics: the principles of a proper graphic composition. The basics of image processing (contrast, brightness, gamma, sharpen) with the use of freeware, e.g. GIMP or the CorelDraw® package. The fundamental rules of composing raster graphical components for publication.
3. Modal analysis with the use of the JMicroVision software.
4. Image analysis with the use of ImageJ and Image SXM freeware; X-MapTools for processing elemental maps:
- Learning basic operations and getting accustomed with the user interface, use of dedicated macros.
- Look-up tables (LUTs): functions, options i operations, applications;
- Initial image processing (pre-processing): use of LUTs, background correction, histogram, contrast, brightness, noise reduction;
- Segmentation – working with greyscale maps:
a) contouring, outlines and edge detection
b) density slicing, thresholding;
c) binary images;
d) pseudocoloured images;
e) grain volume analysis
- grain size analysis.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the course the student is ready to:
- prepare vector graphics, e.g. geological sketch map;
- create and processes images derived from field photographs, micro- and macrophotograps, SEM images and optical microscope images;
- carry out modal analysis of a thin section;
- process image for further qualitative and quantitative analysis of mineral distribution, grain size and volume analysis, obtain digitalized grain boundary maps and textural patterns.
The student develops the skill of unassisted planning of laboratory work with graphics preparation for publications, M.Sc. degree thesis, expert documentation and reports.
Assessment criteria
Graded assignment. Preparation of practical task assigned by the teacher at the appointed time. Second term task: The same as first term.
Active participation and 100% attendance. Twofold non-attendance (with leave) is allowed.
