Introduction to microstructural analysis 1300-OWZMSP
1. Fundamentals of microstructural analysis within sedimentary rocks - short review; definitions; orientation of hand speciments; types of thin sections.
2. Deformation mechanisms:
- brittle fracturing and mineral infilling;
- cataclasis;
- dissolution-precipitation;
- twinning;
- recrystallisation.
3. Syntectonic veins:
- syntaxial;
- antytaxial;
- ataxial.
4. Structural patterns of brittle failure within sedimentary rocks of various lithology and competence: limestones, sandstones and shales.

Learning outcomes
After completing the placement student:
P1A_W01 – understands basic deformational processes that facilitated development of microstructures,
P1A_U01- knows basic methods of microstructural analysis,
P1A_U06 – observes and analyzes microstructural data,
P1A_K07 – regularly updates knowledge on tectonics.
Assessment criteria
Written test based on thin sections observations that comprise recognition and interpretation of microstructures within sedimentary rocks. One absence during classes is allowed. Corrective examination based on the written test.
Practical placement
none
