Field course in historical geology 1300-OKGH2L

The field course is located in the eastern part of the Holy Cross Mountains. Each day is focused on a particular geological aspect presented in stratigraphic order. Discussed are issues linked with the sedimentology, facies development and stratigraphy of subsequent stages of the evolution of the Holy Cross Mountains in the Phanerozoic. During the field course it is possible to collect palaeontological specimens. Cambrian bio- and lithostratigraphy is presented in exposures located in the Klimontów Anticlinorium. Ordovician and Silurian rocks and their unconformable contact with Devonian strata are shown in successions within the Bardo Syncline. The Bukowa Góra Quarry gives an example of clastic Emsian deposits (Lower Devonian), whereas the facies diversity and tectonic structure of the Middle Devonian are presented in the Grzegorzowice-Skały and Świętomarz-Śniadka successions. Interpretation of Early Jurassic sedimentary environments is carried out in the Gromadzice and Podole sections. Upper Jurassic rocks are studied in several exposures near Bałtów, whereas the Neogene deposits are shown near Staszów along the northern margin of the Carpathian Foredeep.

Prerequisites (description)

Credits in: “Physical geology”, “Course of field-course at Bocheniec”, first semester classes in “Historical Geology” (for students of Geology)/classes in ”Historical Geology” (for students of Applied Geology). Knowledge of the stratigraphic chart, knowledge of basic features characterizing marine and continental deposits. General knowledge of the palaeogeography of Europe and Poland in the Phanerozoic.

Learning outcomes

Following the course the student: is capable of explaining the evolution of the Holy Cross Mountains in the Phanerozoic based on classical exposures of the area; can recognize basic fossils identifying the Cambrian, Ordovician, Silurian, Devonian, Jurassic and Neogene systems; can interpret environments of marine and continental sedimentation from the course area.

Assessment criteria

Evaluation of activity during field course reflected in the amount of collected fossils and written final test.
