Natural Compounds and Their Impact on Drug Synthesis 1200-2EN-MON1L
The lecture topics are the following: a review on main groups of secondary metabolites with distinguished biological activity (glycosides, alkaloids, steroids, terpenes, antibiotics): the most important plant raw materials; modern methods of increasing of selected metabolites content in plant material; alkaloids with strong activity toward nervous system as lead compounds in the search for counterpain drugs; natural substances exhibiting antineoplastic, mutagenic and carcinogenic activity and their influence on advances of chemotherapy; natural anticancer drugs of plant origin; drug acting on the nervous system and their non-medical application.

Learning outcomes
After completing the lecture, a student should be able to explain the significance of natural compounds for the drug’s synthesis and give examples. Student should be able to understand major rules for seeking and synthesis of new drugs.
Assessment criteria
Final and retake exam in writing or credit work agreed with the lecturer.
